Just got back from sailing for nine days with Tracy and her dad. This Monday I did a workout at Crossfit Oahu (rough after a week off, drinking and eating poorly), spent some time at Starbucks working on a chapter my professor and I co-authored, then met up with Kris for dinner and drove up to Tantalus to see Jesse, who was in town from D.C. with the senator. His parents own a great property up there and we sat and watched the sun set and the sky darken. I was very simply happy.
In the last week... After Five Needles, spent three nights at Manele Bay on Lanai, two nights at Lahaina on Maui, and finally sailed up to Honolua Bay, where I left the boat to catch a flight back to Oahu.
Manele Bay was amazing. My favorite day Tracy and I woke up early and left before sunrise to hike to the top of the hill overlooking the bay. Came back down, had breakfast, and hopped in the skiff to go to some snorkeling in the bay. Passed a bunch of spinner dolphins on our way out, so stopped to watch as they swam out of the bay, flipping around out of the water. On the way back from snorkeling we saw the dolphins again and got in the water. There were so many more than I had realized from the surface. We swam with them for several minutes, dolphins in front of, behind and under me -- and three baby dolphins! We got back to the boat and rested a bit, then Tracy and I walked up to the Four Seasons resort at Manele, which had been rented by NetApp for 600 of their employees. We tried to blend in, swam in the pool and the hot tub, and got a couple drinks on the "master account." Finally came back down for dinner, which was fresh mahi we had caught off the boat on the sail over the Manele. Tracy's dad had invited a Russian family camping at the beach to join us, so we had a little dinner party.
Lahaina was quite a change after Maui. We went to the yacht club, and then found out our friend Corey had left us some tickets to a stand-up comedy show (Tom Green) at the Maui Theater. He was, fortunately, much funnier than we expected, but being back in such a bustling city was a little jarring.
Honolua Bay was beautiful, did some snorkeling and saw lots of fish and a nice honu (green sea turtle). In the evening I got packed, walked up to the road and hitched a ride back to Lahaina, where Corey picked me up and got me to the airport. I still felt as if the ground were swaying for at least two days after getting off the boat. Fun!
